Eugène Delacroix · Domaine public
This painting by Eugène Delacroix depicts a scene from the chivalric romance Amadís de Gaula. In it, Amadis rescues Princess Olga from Galpan's Castle, in an episode belonging more to the world of chivalric and romantic imagination than to the history of France. Originating in Iberian literature and later widely diffused across Europe, the story of Amadis long nourished aristocratic and literary culture in the early modern period. Painted in 1860, the work shows Delacroix’s continuing interest in literary subjects, dramatic heroism, and rescue narratives set in an idealized medieval world.
