Anne of Brittany, Queen of France

Anne of Brittany, Queen of France

Auteur inconnu · Licence Ouverte 1.0

This woodcut depicts **Anne of Brittany**, who became queen of France twice through her marriages to **Charles VIII** and then **Louis XII**. The image presents the Breton duchess in a solemn and hieratic manner, consistent with princely representation at the end of the fifteenth century and the beginning of the sixteenth. It sheds light on Anne’s exceptional place in the political history of the kingdom, at the crossroads of Breton sovereignty, matrimonial strategy, and the French monarchy. Preserved by the **Bibliothèque interuniversitaire de Santé**, this portrait is less a narrative scene than a useful iconographic support for embodying the figure who dominates the Breton question at the end of **Charles VIII’s** reign.
