Peinture murale du Panthéon (XIXe siècle) · Domaine public
This painting depicts Attila and his army marching toward Paris in the 5th century during the Hun invasions of Gaul. A symbol of destruction and fear, Attila threatened cities of the already weakened Western Roman Empire. According to tradition, the city of Paris was spared, notably through the spiritual intervention of Saint Genevieve, who encouraged the population to resist. This scene illustrates the fear caused by barbarian invasions and marks a key moment in the transition from Roman Antiquity to the early Middle Ages in Gaul.
