This 19th-century illustration depicts the Battle of Höchstädt, also known as the Battle of Blenheim, fought on 13 August 1704 in Bavaria during the War of the Spanish Succession. The Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy crushed the Franco-Bavarian army of Marshal de Tallard, who was captured along with twenty-three infantry battalions. This defeat, the first of such magnitude suffered by Louis XIV in decades, ended the myth of French military invincibility and cost the kingdom its Bavarian ally.
