The Battle of Coutras, where the Duke of Joyeuse Was Killed

This engraving by **Frans Hogenberg**, produced the same year as the event it depicts, illustrates the **Battle of Coutras**, fought on 20 October 1587 between the royal army of Henri III's favourite, **Anne de Joyeuse**, and the Protestant forces of **Henri de Navarre**. It shows the course of this engagement, one of the rare pitched battles the Protestants clearly won during the Wars of Religion, in which Joyeuse himself was killed by a pistol shot. This victory, achieved in under three hours through an innovative tactic combining infantry and cavalry, durably shifted Navarre's military prestige, contrasting with the royal setbacks of the same period.
