The Battle of Saint-Denis, 10 November 1567

This engraving by Jacques Tortorel and Jean Perrissin, from their collection of Forty Tableaux published in Geneva around 1570, depicts the Battle of Saint-Denis, fought on 10 November 1567 at the gates of Paris between the army of the Prince of Condé, who had been besieging the capital since the 'surprise of Meaux', and royal troops commanded by the elderly constable Anne de Montmorency. Aged seventy-four, Montmorency was mortally wounded there and died two days later, leaving the Catholic command without its most experienced leader. This inconclusive battle nonetheless ended the siege of Paris and paved the way for the Peace of Longjumeau, signed a few months later, which temporarily closed the second War of Religion.
