Battle of Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier (1488)

Paul Lehugeur · Public domain

This historical illustration attributed to **Paul Lehugeur** depicts the **Battle of Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier**, won on **28 July 1488** by the royal forces against the coalition of rebel princes and their Breton allies. The clash marked a decisive turning point in the **Mad War**, breaking the military momentum of the noble opposition to the government of **Anne of France** and **Pierre de Beaujeu** during the minority of **Charles VIII**. It also prepared the **Treaty of Le Verger**, which placed the Breton succession under the direct supervision of the French monarchy. Produced long after the event, the image belongs to the realm of historical reconstruction, yet it gives effective visual form to one of the victories that secured royal predominance at the end of the fifteenth century.
