La bataille de Tolbiac (496)

This painting depicts the Battle of Tolbiac, during which Clovis fought the Alemanni around 496. According to tradition, as the battle turned against him, Clovis invoked the Christian God and vowed to convert if he were victorious. After winning the battle, he fulfilled his promise and was baptized. This episode is considered a foundational moment, marking both a military victory and the beginning of the Frankish king’s conversion to Christianity.
