Horace Vernet · Public domain / domaine public
This painting by Horace Vernet, titled “The Battle of Hanau,” depicts the engagement of 30–31 October 1813 between Austro-Bavarian forces and the French army. The composition shows a vast battle scene in which enemy cavalry charges the French grand battery, while a counter-charge by the French Guard cavalry unfolds in the foreground. The image emphasizes the scale of the battlefield, the density of the fighting, the smoke of artillery, and the spectacular nature of the clash between cavalry, infantry, and guns. Painted in 1824, this oil on canvas, now in the National Gallery in London, belongs to the military history painting of the early nineteenth century and reflects Vernet’s taste for panoramic battle scenes, troop movement, and the visual dramatization of the Napoleonic Wars.
