Bataille d'Iéna

Horace Vernet · Public domain / domaine public

This painting by Horace Vernet, titled “Battle of Jena,” depicts an episode from the 1806 campaign in which Napoleon won a decisive victory over Prussia. The composition shows the emperor on horseback, surrounded by officers and passing before soldiers drawn up in battle order, in a scene that emphasizes command, military discipline, and the theatricality of imperial power. The image stresses Napoleon’s central figure, the imposing presence of cavalry and infantry, and the solemn atmosphere preceding or accompanying military action. Produced in the nineteenth century, the work belongs to Napoleonic history painting and reflects Vernet’s taste for grand scenes of prestige, imperial campaigns, and the heroic visualization of French victories.
