Scène de bataille, 1883

Alphonse de Neuville · Public domain / domaine public

This painting by Alphonse de Neuville, titled “Battle Scene, 1883,” depicts a military clash of great violence, amid a tangled mass of horses, artillerymen, infantrymen, overturned guns, and bodies lying on the ground. The composition emphasizes the chaos of impact, the brutality of close combat, and the disorder of the battlefield, in a landscape blurred by smoke and the conflicting movements of the fighters. The work does not merely show a military action, but seeks to convey the dramatic intensity of a moment of destruction in which cavalry, artillery, and infantry collide in extreme confusion. Painted in 1883, it belongs to late nineteenth-century military painting and reflects Neuville’s interest in spectacular war scenes, heroic gestures, and the violent materiality of combat.
