Bertrand du Guesclin

Alphonse de Neuville · Domaine public

This illustration depicts Bertrand du Guesclin, one of the most famous French military leaders of the 14th century. Constable of France under Charles V, he played a major role in the reconquest of territories lost during the Hundred Years’ War, notably against the English and the free companies. Remembered in history as a model of military valor and loyalty to the king, he became in the 19th century a heroic figure of national history. This image, published in 1894 in the book Great Men and Famous Women, reflects that celebration of the great figures of the past. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}
