Bonaparte au trône de Charlemagne (1804) à Aix-la-Chapelle

Henri-Paul Motte · Public Domain Mark 1.0 / domaine public

This painting by Henri-Paul Motte, titled “Bonaparte at the Throne of Charlemagne in Aachen,” depicts Napoleon Bonaparte contemplating Charlemagne’s throne in Aachen. The scene refers to his meditation at Charlemagne’s tomb on 7 September 1804, a few months before the coronation ceremony celebrated on 2 December 1804 at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. The composition emphasizes the symbolic link between the Carolingian legacy and Napoleonic power, placing Bonaparte within an imperial continuity charged with political memory. Exhibited at the Salon of 1898, the work belongs to nineteenth-century history painting, attentive to solemn gestures, places of memory, and the visual construction of legitimacy.
