Brunehaut affrontant l’armée de Frédégonde

Hermann Knackfuß · Domaine public

This painting depicts Brunhilda, a Merovingian queen, preparing to confront the army of her rival Fredegund in the late 6th century. After the death of her allies, she personally took charge of resistance in the conflicts between Frankish kingdoms. The scene highlights her active role in political and military struggles, which was rare for a woman of that time. It illustrates the intensity of the rivalry between Austrasia and Neustria, as well as Brunhilda’s determination to defend her power.
