The Marriage of Louis XIII, King of France and Navarre, and Anne of Austria

This large canvas (2.49 m by 1.38 m) by the Toulouse painter **Jean Chalette** (1581-1644), commissioned by the Capitouls of Toulouse as early as 1614-1615, depicts the marriage of **Louis XIII** and **Anne of Austria**, celebrated by proxy at Burgos on 18 October 1615 and then in person at Bordeaux on 25 November following. Held at the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse, this work, commissioned almost contemporaneously with the event, testifies to the considerable resonance that this Franco-Spanish marriage, a cornerstone of regent Marie de Médicis's policy, had even in major provincial towns.
