Clovis tue Alaric II à la bataille de Vouillé (507)

Charles-Joseph Natoire · Domaine public

This painting depicts Clovis, King of the Franks, killing Alaric II, King of the Visigoths, during the Battle of Vouillé in 507. This confrontation opposed two major powers that emerged after the fall of the Roman Empire in Gaul. Clovis’s victory marked a decisive turning point: it allowed the Franks to dominate a large part of the territory and push the Visigoths back toward southern Gaul and Spain. This event contributed to the rise of the Frankish kingdom as a dominant power in Western Europe.
