This illustration depicts a battle between Clovis, King of the Franks, and the Visigoths in the early 6th century. These conflicts were part of the struggle for control of Gaul after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. The Frankish victory over the Visigoths, particularly at the Battle of Vouillé in 507, allowed Clovis to extend his authority over much of the territory. The scene illustrates the transition between barbarian kingdoms and the emergence of the Frankish kingdom as a dominant power.
