This portrait depicts Philip III of France, known as Philip the Bold, who reigned from 1270 to 1285 and was the son of Louis IX. He ascended to the throne upon his father’s death during the Tunis Crusade. His reign continued the Capetian dynasty at a time when the kingdom was already powerful but faced new challenges, particularly in the Mediterranean and Spain. Philip III took part in military campaigns, including the Aragonese Crusade, which ended in failure. This portrait portrays a ruler inheriting a strong kingdom while facing complex European challenges.
