Portrait de Philippe V le Long

Jean-Dominique Debacq · Domaine public

This portrait depicts Philip V of France, known as Philip the Tall, who reigned from 1316 to 1322 and was the son of Philip IV the Fair. He ascended to the throne after the death of his brother Louis X and the brief reign of John I the Posthumous. His accession marked a key moment in the succession crisis, with the exclusion of women from the throne, a principle that later became known as Salic law. Philip V worked to restore royal authority and stabilize the kingdom after a period of instability.
