Portrait de Louis VI le Gros

Portrait de Louis VI le Gros

Merry-Joseph Blondel · Domaine public

This portrait depicts Louis VI of France, known as Louis the Fat, who reigned from 1108 to 1137. His reign marks an important step in strengthening royal authority against feudal lords. Louis VI actively fought rebellious barons within the royal domain and gradually asserted the king’s power, particularly in the Île-de-France region. Supported by Abbot Suger, he laid the foundations for a stronger and more organized monarchy. This portrait portrays a ruler determined to impose order and consolidate the Capetian dynasty.
