This portrait depicts Louis VII of France, who reigned from 1137 to 1180. The son of Louis VI the Fat, he inherited a kingdom in consolidation but faced numerous challenges. His reign is marked by his participation in the Second Crusade as well as his marriage and later divorce from Eleanor of Aquitaine, an event with major political consequences. Eleanor subsequently married Henry II Plantagenet, future King of England, greatly strengthening English power against France. This portrait portrays a pious king confronted with decisions that would shape the future of the kingdom.
