This portrait depicts Louis VIII of France, who reigned from 1223 to 1226 and was the son of Philip Augustus. Although his reign was short, he continued his father’s work by consolidating territorial gains against the Plantagenets and strengthening royal authority. Even before becoming king, he distinguished himself in England, where he was briefly recognized as ruler by part of the nobility. His reign represents the continuation of Capetian expansion and set the stage for the achievements of his son, Louis IX.
