Portrait de Louis IX (Saint Louis)

Auguste de Creuse · Domaine public

This portrait depicts Louis IX of France, known as Saint Louis, who reigned from 1226 to 1270. He is considered one of the most emblematic rulers of the Capetian monarchy, known for his piety, sense of justice, and involvement in the Crusades. During his reign, the Kingdom of France was strengthened, and the image of the king as a just ruler became prominent, notably through the tradition of dispensing justice under the oak tree of Vincennes. Louis IX embodies the ideal of a Christian king, combining political authority with moral example.
