Mort de Garcilaso de la Vega au siège du Muy, 1536

Josep Serra i Porsón · Public domain / domaine public

This illustration depicts the death of Garcilaso de la Vega at the siege of Le Muy in 1536, during the Italian Wars. The composition shows a caparisoned horse collapsing in the middle of an assault at the foot of fortifications struck by projectiles, while soldiers try to rescue or carry away the wounded man in the heart of the melee. The image emphasizes the violence of siege warfare, the disorder of the clash, and the heroic dramatization of the fall of a famous figure. Produced around 1875 for an illustrated history of Spain, it is not a direct witness to the sixteenth-century event but a nineteenth-century historical reconstruction intended to give spectacular visual form to major military episodes of the past.
