This painting depicts the defense of the city of Acre in 1291, the last major stronghold of the Crusader states in the Holy Land. The Hospitaller marshal Matthew of Clermont is shown fighting to repel the assaults of Muslim forces. Despite fierce resistance, the city falls, marking the end of lasting Latin presence in the East. This event symbolizes the failure of the Crusades and the loss of territories conquered by Europeans in the Near East.
