Le départ de Galswinthe pour la Gaule

Art du XIXe siècle · Domaine public

This painting depicts the departure of Galswintha, a Visigothic princess, leaving her homeland to marry the Frankish king Chilperic I in the 6th century. This political marriage aimed to strengthen alliances between post-Roman kingdoms. The scene conveys both hope and the diplomatic stakes of this union, which would soon turn into tragedy. It marks the beginning of the bloody rivalries between Galswintha, Fredegund, and Brunhilda, which deeply shaped Merovingian history.
