This illustration depicts the deposition of Childeric III, the last Merovingian king, and the elevation of Pepin the Short as king of the Franks in 754. This moment marks the end of the Merovingian dynasty and the beginning of the Carolingian dynasty. Supported by the Frankish aristocracy and legitimized by the Church, notably the pope, Pepin seized power, ending the symbolic role of Merovingian kings. This transition represents a fundamental step in the evolution of power in Western Europe.
