This detail from a painting by Édouard Detaille, executed in 1906, isolates a fragment of the larger composition depicting the death of King Henry II during the tournament held at the Hôtel des Tournelles, in Paris, on 30 June 1559. The scene evokes the instant when the king, wounded in the eye by a splinter from the broken lance of Gabriel de Montgomery, captain of his Scottish guard, collapses before the court gathered to celebrate the peace of Cateau-Cambrésis. A renowned military painter of the late nineteenth century, Detaille belongs to a tradition of grand national history painting that gave visual form, several centuries later, to this founding episode of royal legend. This tighter framing emphasises the tragic intimacy of the moment rather than the pageantry of the surrounding tournament.
