Entry of Charles VIII into Naples

Éloi Firmin Féron · CC BY-SA 4.0

This history painting by **Éloi Firmin Féron**, completed in **1837**, depicts the entry of **Charles VIII** into **Naples** on **12 May 1495**, the high point of the first French expedition to Italy. The scene gives monumental form to the temporary conquest of the Neapolitan kingdom by showing the king at the centre of a solemn display that conveys both the prestige of victory and its dynastic ambition. It is not a direct witness to the event, but a nineteenth-century historical reconstruction cast in heroic terms. For the reign of **Charles VIII**, it embodies the moment when military success seemed complete, just before the diplomatic reversal brought about by the **League of Venice**.
