Feast of the Pheasant in 1454

Henri Félix Emmanuel Philippoteaux · Public Domain Mark 1.0 / domaine public

This engraving, titled “Feast of the Pheasant in 1454,” depicts the famous banquet organized by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in Lille in 1454. The scene conveys the splendor of the Burgundian court, with a banquet table in the foreground and elaborate stage sets and entertainments in the background designed to impress the guests. The feast became famous for the chivalric vows and crusading project it dramatized after the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans. The illustration emphasizes the theatrical, sumptuous, and political nature of the event, a symbol of Burgundian court culture at the end of the Middle Ages. Created in the nineteenth century in the tradition of historical imagery, it offers a vivid reconstruction of one of the most celebrated princely banquets in European history.
