Frédégonde assistant au mariage de Chilpéric et Galswinthe

Lawrence Alma-Tadema · Domaine public

This painting depicts Fredegund watching the marriage of King Chilperic I to the Visigothic princess Galswintha in the 6th century. The scene highlights the tension between the characters: Fredegund, the king’s former companion, observes the political union that pushes her aside. This marriage, intended to strengthen alliances between kingdoms, is marked from the outset by personal and political rivalries. It foreshadows the conflicts to come, including the assassination of Galswintha and the wars between Fredegund and Brunhilda.
