Les funérailles de Dagobert

Les funérailles de Dagobert

Octave Tassaert · Domaine public

This painting depicts the funeral of Dagobert I, King of the Franks in the 7th century, held at Saint-Denis. Dagobert is often considered the last great Merovingian king, having exercised relatively strong and centralized authority. After his death, the dynasty gradually declined, with royal power weakening in favor of the mayors of the palace. The scene illustrates the importance of funeral rituals and the site of Saint-Denis, which would later become the burial place of French kings.
