Les guerriers de Genséric pillant un camp

Alphonse de Neuville · No known copyright restrictions / domaine public

This illustration, captioned “Genseric's Warriors Plundering a Camp,” depicts a scene of violence attributed to the Vandals under the leadership of Genseric. The composition shows armed fighters bursting into a ravaged camp, amid tents, abandoned weapons, and fallen bodies, while a mounted warrior raises his weapon above the chaos. The image emphasizes the brutality of plunder, the confusion of the assault, and the sudden collapse of the attacked encampment. Produced for a late nineteenth-century work of universal history, it is not an ancient witness but a historical reconstruction intended to give a dramatic visual form to the invasions and wars of Late Antiquity. It thus reflects the nineteenth century’s taste for historical illustration centered on scenes of destruction, military shock, and the fall of empires.
