Henri IV in His Coronation Robes

This state portrait, painted by **Frans Pourbus the Younger** between 1611 and 1613, depicts **Henri IV** wearing his coronation robes. It is not, however, a work contemporary with the reign: commissioned by **Christina of Lorraine**, Grand Duchess of Tuscany and a relative of Marie de' Medici, this painting was produced after the king's death to adorn the Palazzo Pitti in Florence, in a commemorative spirit intended to honour the memory of the deceased sovereign at the Tuscan court, linked by blood to the new Queen of France. This posthumous image, now held at the Galleria Palatina, illustrates how the memory of Henri IV continued, beyond the kingdom's borders, to nourish the official iconography of European courts allied to the Bourbons.
