Henri IV at the Siege of Montmélian

This lithograph by **Ange-Louis Janet**, published in Paris in 1861, depicts **Henri IV** at the **Siege of Montmélian**, one of the most renowned citadels in Europe, besieged from 16 August to 16 November 1600 during the Franco-Savoyard War. The king, who had established his headquarters at Grenoble from 5 July 1600, personally directed this campaign, intended to settle by arms the territorial dispute over the Marquisate of Saluzzo left unresolved since the Peace of Vervins. Produced more than two and a half centuries after the events, this image reflects the persistence, in nineteenth-century popular illustration, of the image of Henri IV as a warrior king present on every front of his kingdom's consolidation.
