This watercolor by Georges Scott depicts a famous scene from the beginning of Hugh Capet’s reign. The king, standing at the center in his red mantle and crown, faces Count Aldebert, dressed in blue, who answers him defiantly. According to the tradition recalled in the caption, when Hugh Capet asks him, “Who made you count?”, Aldebert replies, “Who made you king?” The composition emphasizes the political tension of the moment: the two main figures confront one another in a solemn interior, surrounded by men-at-arms, banners, and silent witnesses. More than a military episode, the work illustrates the fragility of royal authority at the beginning of the Capetian dynasty, at a time when the king still had to assert his power against the great lords. Produced centuries after the events, the image belongs to the genre of historical reconstruction and contributes to a dramatic reading of the origins of the Capetian monarchy.
