Dans les tranchées

This painting by Alphonse de Neuville, titled “In the Trenches,” depicts French soldiers sheltering in a dug-out snowy position during the Franco-Prussian War. The composition shows exhausted, wounded, or sleeping men huddled around a small fire, while rifles, bags, and equipment are scattered in the foreground. The image emphasizes cold, waiting, and physical and moral exhaustion, far removed from heroic charge scenes. Produced in the nineteenth century, the work belongs to a form of military painting attentive to the concrete reality of the soldier, the harshness of campaign conditions, and the human dimension of war.
