La Levée du siège de Metz en 1553

Lucien-Étienne Mélingue · Domaine public

Known on Wikimedia Commons under the title The Lifting of the Siege of Metz in 1553, this work is a 1922 copy after an 1878 original by Lucien-Étienne Mélingue, associated with the Assize Hall of the Moselle at the Palais de Justice in Metz. It depicts the end of the siege of Metz, a major episode in the wars opposing the kingdom of France and the Habsburgs in the mid-sixteenth century. The scene presents a winter military camp and emphasizes fatigue, suspense, and the gravity of a decisive moment rather than the direct action of battle itself. As a history painting, the work forms part of the monumental memory of an event long celebrated as one of the major defensive successes of the French monarchy.
