Le Combat des Trente

Le Combat des Trente

Octave Penguilly L'Haridon · Domaine public

This painting by Octave Penguilly L'Haridon, completed in 1857, depicts the Combat of the Thirty, a famous episode of the Breton War of Succession that took place in 1351 within the broader context of the Hundred Years’ War. The work shows the violence of the clash between the supporters of Charles of Blois and those of John of Montfort, in a composition that emphasizes chivalric heroism, the disorder of battle, and the Breton memory of the event. Painted several centuries after the facts, it is not a direct witness but a nineteenth-century historical reinterpretation, produced at a time when artists were deeply interested in the Middle Ages, provincial identities, and the great scenes of the French past. The painting is now closely tied to the memorial legacy of this confrontation, long celebrated as a symbol of bravery and martial honor.
