Le matin du 10 thermidor an II

This work depicts the morning of 10 Thermidor, Year II, a decisive moment of the French Revolution following the fall of Robespierre and his supporters. The scene shows Robespierre wounded, lying down and surrounded by guards and figures of revolutionary power, in an atmosphere of tension, exhaustion, and political upheaval. It refers to the hours preceding Robespierre’s execution on 10 Thermidor Year II, that is 28 July 1794, after the crisis opened by the events of 9 and 10 Thermidor. Although it is a later reconstruction, the image contributes to the dramatic memory of the end of the Terror and to the visual representation of one of the most famous episodes of the French Revolution.
