Henri-Paul Motte · Public Domain Mark 1.0 / domaine public

This work by Henri-Paul Motte, titled “The Siege of Alesia,” depicts Roman soldiers led by Julius Caesar besieging the Gallic oppidum of Alesia, now identified with Alise-Sainte-Reine, in 52 BC. The composition highlights siege machines, Roman military organization, and the logistical scale of the encirclement in a spectacular vision inspired by ancient history. Painted around 1888, this nineteenth-century history painting is less a direct testimony than a learned and dramatic reconstruction of one of the most famous episodes of the Gallic Wars, marked by the decisive confrontation between Caesar and Vercingetorix.
