The Assassination of Concini

This work by the painter and illustrator **Maurice Leloir**, created in 1901, depicts the assassination of **Concino Concini**, Marquis d'Ancre and favourite of Marie de Médicis, killed on 24 April 1617 at the entrance to the Louvre by **Vitry**, captain of the guards, on the orders of the Duke of Luynes. Painted nearly three centuries after the events, this composition belongs to the tradition of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century history painting, which drew heavily on the dramatic episodes of Louis XIII's reign to feed its taste for meticulous costumed reconstruction — Leloir being particularly renowned for the accuracy of his historical costumes.
