Richelieu, Louis XIII and Marie de' Medici at the Day of the Dupes

Maurice Leloir · Public domain

This composition by **Maurice Leloir**, created in 1901 for Théodore Cahu's illustrated work *Richelieu*, depicts **Louis XIII**, his mother **Marie de' Medici** and Cardinal **Richelieu** at the moment of the **Day of the Dupes**, on 10 and 11 November 1630, when the king chose to keep his minister in office rather than yield to the queen mother's demands for his disgrace. Renowned for the meticulousness of his costumed reconstructions, Leloir helped, like other Belle Époque illustrators, to fix the great scenes of Richelieu's ministry in the popular imagination.
