Les Duellistes

Alphonse de Neuville · Public domain / domaine public

This illustration, titled “The Duelists,” depicts the tragic aftermath of a duel in a narrow street, as several gentlemen approach the bodies lying on the ground. The composition emphasizes the sudden violence of the clash, the silence that follows the fight, and the dramatic tension created by the stance of the survivors, still armed, around the fallen men. The image presents the duel as an episode of bravery, wounded honor, and brutal death, within a confined urban setting that heightens the sense of enclosure. Published in L’Illustration européenne in 1871, it is not a direct witness to a specific historical scene, but a nineteenth-century narrative image reflecting the period’s taste for dramatic episodes, early modern costume, and individual confrontations brought to their climax.
