This engraving, titled “Louis IV of France at the Council of Ingelheim in 948,” depicts the king of West Francia at the Council of Ingelheim in 948. The scene shows the sovereign in a solemn setting, at the center of an ecclesiastical and political assembly, in a composition that highlights royal authority as well as the role of bishops and leading nobles. The episode belongs to the tensions of Louis IV’s reign, marked by aristocratic rivalries and Ottonian intervention in the affairs of the western Frankish kingdom. Created in the nineteenth century, the image belongs to the tradition of French historical illustration, which sought to give dramatic and accessible form to major political and religious episodes of the national past.
