Le martyre de saint Sigismond et de sa famille

Le martyre de saint Sigismond et de sa famille

Domenico Beccafumi · Domaine public

This painting depicts the martyrdom of Sigismund, King of the Burgundians in the 6th century, and his family. Having converted to Catholic Christianity, Sigismund was captured and executed along with his relatives following political and dynastic conflicts. The scene illustrates the violence of power struggles in the kingdoms that emerged from the Roman Empire, as well as the religious dimension associated with martyr figures. This episode reflects the complexity of relations between barbarian kingdoms, particularly between the Burgundians and the Franks, in the early Middle Ages.
