This illustration by Émile Bayard depicts the massacre at Béziers in 1209, a major episode at the beginning of the Albigensian Crusade. The composition shows a scene of panic and violence inside a vast religious building, where fighters, civilians, and clerics are caught together in turmoil, amid smoke, gestures of flight, and fallen bodies. The image emphasizes the collective horror of the massacre, the chaos of the assault, and the profanation of a sacred space turned into a place of death. Produced around 1867 for Henri Martin’s Histoire de France populaire, it is not a direct witness to the medieval event but a nineteenth-century historical reconstruction intended to give dramatic form to the great tragic episodes of French history.
