Simon Marmion · Domaine public
This illumination by Simon Marmion, produced around 1455-1457 for the manuscript of the Grandes Chroniques de France, depicts a dedication scene of strong political and cultural significance. Guillaume Fillastre is shown presenting the work to Philip the Good, duke of Burgundy, in the presence of Chancellor Nicolas Rolin and the future Charles the Bold. The composition stages a refined court ceremony: the prince sits in a sumptuous interior, surrounded by advisers, attendants, and members of his household, while the gesture of offering the manuscript highlights the prestige of historical writing in Burgundian princely culture. The work does not depict a military or violent episode, but rather a moment of political legitimation, in which the reception of the Grandes Chroniques de France inscribes the house of Burgundy within the historical narrative of the kingdom. Through the richness of its decor, costumes, and ornamental border, the miniature illustrates the high artistic level of fifteenth-century Franco-Flemish illumination.
