Death of Gaston de Foix

Trichon · Public Domain Mark 1.0 / domaine public

This nineteenth-century illustration by Trichon, titled “Death of Gaston de Foix,” depicts the heroic death of Gaston de Foix, Duke of Nemours, at the Battle of Ravenna in 1512. The young French commander is shown on horseback, struck down in the midst of intense fighting among soldiers armed with pikes and halberds. The composition emphasizes the violence of the clash and the sacrifice of the military leader, who died at the very moment of French victory. The scene reflects the romantic ideal of the hero fallen on the battlefield, a common theme in nineteenth-century historical illustration.
