Medal commemorating the death of Louis XIII

This bronze medal, engraved by **Jérôme Roussel** between 1677 and 1702, bears on its reverse a portrait of the young **Louis XIV** and commemorates, several decades after the fact, the death of his father **Louis XIII**, which occurred on 14 May 1643 at the château of Saint-Germain-en-Laye. It is not a narrative scene depicting the king's final agony, but a numismatic object of dynastic commemoration, typical of French medal-making art of the Grand Siècle, intended to celebrate the continuity of the monarchy through the succession from father to son.
